If New York City is already magical, New York City over Thanksgiving is on another level. Cold air, nonstop walking, Christmas lights starting to pop up—and food everywhere you turn.
This trip wasn’t about eating “perfectly.” It was about experiencing the city through food, honoring Thanksgiving in a new place, and leaning into balance instead of rules.
Here’s where we ate, what surprised me, and the nutrition (and life) lessons NYC somehow always teaches without trying.
Starting the Day the NYC Way: Bagels, Tea & Cozy Stops 🥯

Mornings in New York require fuel—and lots of it. We started at Ralph’s Coffee, which felt like the perfect cozy, classic NYC stop before hitting the streets.
We also made a very important stop at Broad Nosh Bagels—because no New York trip is complete without a proper bagel. Dense, chewy, and actually filling, it was the kind of breakfast that holds you over when you’re walking miles a day.
Later, we stopped by Nomad Tea Parlor, a sit-down Chinese restaurant that felt like a calm pause from the constant movement of the city.


Travel nutrition thought: When you’re walking all day, carbs aren’t the enemy—they’re fuel. Pair them with protein, hydrate, and your energy levels thank you.
Dumplings & Ramen: Comfort Food That Makes Sense 🍜

One of my favorite meals of the trip was at Destination Dumplings. Warm, savory, and deeply comforting. Dumplings get labeled as indulgent, but they’re actually a great example of balance—carbs, protein, and fat working together.
Another must was Ichiran Ramen. After a cold day of walking, this hit exactly how it needed to. Rich broth, noodles, protein—simple, satisfying, and world famous.

Nutrition reminder: Comfort food can still nourish you. Meals don’t need to be light to be supportive, especially when travel is physically demanding.
Yes, We Tried a NYC Street Dog 🌭
At some point, you have to try a street dog in New York. So we did—right in Times Square.
We went with a classic New York chili dog, and honestly? It was sweeter than I was anticipating. Not bad—just different than expected. One of those “you had to be there” moments.
Food expectation vs. reality: Sometimes food surprises you. That doesn’t make it wrong—it just makes it memorable.
Aggie Football, NYC Style 🏈
One of the most unexpected highlights of the trip was stopping by Jack Doyle’s for an Aggie football game.
Jack Doyle’s hosts a watch party for every Texas A&M game, creating a space where Aggies in New York can come together, watch football, and enjoy a sense of home—even thousands of miles away from College Station. From the atmosphere to the hospitality, they truly did an amazing job hosting us and made us feel instantly welcome.
There’s something special about food, sports, and shared traditions bringing people together—no matter where you are.
Nutrition & life takeaway: Connection matters. Meals and gatherings nourish more than just your body—they nourish community.
Pizza Stops You Can’t Skip 🍕
Of course, we did pizza.

We stopped at Joe’s Pizza, straight out of the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man 2 movie, and also grabbed slices from Roma Pizza.
Was it nutritionally perfect? No. Was it part of the New York experience? Absolutely.
Real-life nutrition: Enjoying iconic food without guilt is part of a healthy relationship with food.
Thanksgiving Dinner at Rolf’s (Straight Out of a Christmas Movie) 🎄

Thanksgiving dinner at Rolf’s German Restaurant felt unreal. The entire restaurant was covered floor-to-ceiling in Christmas lights and decorations—it genuinely felt like stepping into a holiday snow globe.
The food was hearty and traditional, exactly what Thanksgiving should be. Sitting, slowing down, and soaking in the moment made it about more than just the plate.
Nutrition takeaway: Mindful eating isn’t about choosing the “healthiest” option—it’s about presence, enjoyment, and connection.
Ending With Cheesecake (Because Obviously) 🍰
We finished the trip with Junior’s Cheesecake. Rich, creamy, iconic—and completely worth it.
Some foods nourish your body. Some nourish your soul. Both belong.
What This NYC Trip Reinforced for Me
Thanksgiving in New York reminded me that:
- Walking more naturally balances richer meals
- Satisfaction is part of health
- Food and community go hand in hand
Bagels, dumplings, ramen, pizza, chili dogs, cheesecake—and Aggie football in NYC. This trip reinforced what I already believe: nutrition is about balance, not perfection.
